Year of the Dog festivities continue
New Year festivities continue to welcome the Year of the Dog. At the Milpitas Community Chinese School, a traditional Lion Dance by Joi Ying Shaolin Chow Gar Kung Fu Dragon & Lion Dance Group under the leadership of Sifu Luu welcomed the crowd to the New Year on Saturday, February 11. After the lions cleared the stage, it was time for the students to embrace the Year of the Dog in their own way, reciting poems, singing songs, traditional dancing and demonstrating martial arts prowess under the direction of Sifu Gao of O-mei Kung Fu Academy in Fremont
Special guest, Milpitas Mayor Jose Esteves joined the crowd of students and their families to enjoy the show. School officials including past Principal Wilson Tse, current Principal Tak Liong and Vice-Principal Christine Dang were understandably proud of student performances.
Milpitas Chinese School began Saturday classes in 1995 in a community effort to help children develop language skills and understand their culture. The non-profit school functions almost entirely through volunteer parent efforts. Cantonese language classes are held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and Han Yu Pin Yin (Chinese Phonics) is offered to advanced students and parents who wish to learn to read and speak in Mandarin. Chinese arts, calligraphy and Origami are also offered following language classes.
