January 10, 2006 > Neighborhood blight
Thank you so much for your editorial on the Bell Manor project. I have lived in the neighborhood for several years, and have growing concerns about the Islander Motel. My own house as well as my neighbor's has been burglarized in the past, and it's hard not to think that the many parolees living in this building did not have something to do with it. With so many children that live in the neighborhood because of the surrounding apartments, I can't understand why something can't be done to get rid of this motel. I welcome the building of condos here, but can't imagine anybody buying them when they are right next door to this neighborhood blight. And with the projected higher-density living, we have to be even more concerned about the safety and well-being of ourselves and our children.
The empty lot that's been sitting there neglected for years is also an eyesore. I know that with the ever-tightening budget of the city, we can hardly afford little luxuries, but it would be wonderful if we had a small plot that could be used as a playground for the neighborhood kids. Hopefully the city will take into consideration the many concerns that your editorial has raised.
