Fremont teachers receive P.A.T. grantsby Beth Booth
Visual Arts classroom activities based on the concepts of Peace, Acceptance and Tolerance, will be supported by $500 supply grants awarded to 20 Fremont teachers for the 2005-06 school year. These P.A.T. grants, funded by the Hal Booth Memorial Art Fund, have been given to 11 elementary, two junior high and three high schools. The planned projects include painting and sculpture activities representing various cultures, drawings and discussion about the importance of racial harmony and student designed murals for school buildings.
Grant recipients and their projects include:
Elementary
Maureen Addiego- Cabrillo: study historical figures, write Haiku, illustrations
Connie Kellogg- Chadbourne: pen pals, postal art exchange
Joanne Cho- Durham: study artists and their countries of origin
Qiang Ma- Forest Park: illustrate and share poems on peace
Frances Bender- Gomes: friendship, tolerance and forgiveness, illustrations and poems
Kathleen Caine- Harvey Green: posters and other projects promoting drama programs
Ray Flores- Grimmer: Native American history and culture, clay carvings
Sue McKittrick- Grimmer: art instruction, color theory, diversity puppets
Maria DeLuz- James Leitch: diversity, illustrating class books, sculpture, watercolor
Eden Adams- Mattos: study of the Eight Great Traits of the Character Education Program
Codel Frydendahl- Niles: create artwork and writing on bringing peace to the world
Lisa O'Connor- Niles: study of Native American culture, art, spiritual teachings
Pam Ibrahim- Vallejo Mill: study famous artists and their method of presenting ideas
Junior High
Susan Manbeian- Hopkins: create folk art pieces from multicultural background
Jane Turner- Thornton: read Anne Frank and discuss prejudices
High School
Robert Moran- Irvington: learn about peace and study the Iliad
Victoria Mulcahy- Kennedy: mural depicting flags of all countries
Edie Christensen- Mission San Jose: mural with images of multiculturalism
Frank Kreacie- Mission San Jose: mural and study historic frescos
Risha Krishna- Mission San Jose: discuss and study racial harmony
