Dance Ambassadors 2005by Susana Nuñez
Last month, Yoko Young, owner of Yoko's Performing Arts and Dance Academy in Fremont, traveled with 22 of her top students to Fukaya, Japan as ambassadors representing Fremont. Fukaya is Fremont's sister city so Mayor Bob Wasserman and City Manager Fred Diaz, accompanied the group.
Since its inception in 1995, Yoko's Performing Arts and Dance Academy in Fremont, has earned praise as one of the best studios in the Bay Area. This year, Yoko faced the challenge of selecting 22 dancers to accompany her to the Fukaya celebration. This talented group, comprised of top students, practiced every weekend for months in preparation for their trip. Luckily, for locals who did not travel along with them, the troupe held a sneak preview of their Japan performance prior to the trip.
The sold-out performance took place on Oct. 16 at the Ohlone College Smith Center. Before the show began, each dancer took the stage to personally thank the community and their loved ones for their support over the years. They also expressed gratitude to Yoko for the opportunity to travel to Japan and display their talents abroad. Many dancers were especially excited about the trip because of their Japanese ancestry.
After the introduction, the energetic show kicked off with a jazz number titled "Party."
From their first number, the audience could quickly see that one of the greatest qualities of this talented group is their ability to synchronize. The ensemble did not miss a beat throughout their various dance numbers, which ranged from jazz to lyrical and tap. An audience favorite was the group's fun rendition of Cabaret, reminiscent of original Cabaret girl, Liza Minelli.
"Everything was fabulous," said Yoko upon return from the trip. "The girls and I had a wonderful time and they are all so happy to have gone." As Yoko had anticipated, her top students put on an exceptional performance for the Fukaya celebration. She mentioned that she is already planning to take another group of dancers to the next Dance Ambassadors event that will be held in five years.
