Home, sweet home
Tri-City college students have had few housing choices. Living at home is often the least expensive alternative, but not always the best choice. Competing demands for time and attention from other family members and a lack of supportive personnel can result in a poor study environment. The camaraderie and synergy of life with other students may also be missing.
Competing in the rental market is a choice for students, but housing may be expensive, far from campus and living conditions often unmonitored. While many colleges and universities have housing on or near campus, this amenity has been lacking for students of local technical schools and community colleges. DeVry University has now done something about this dilemma. Ceremonies on Wednesday, October 19th officially opened Ron Taylor Residence Hall, located adjacent to the Fremont campus, with room for 300 students.
The 84,000 square foot residence boasts well-appointed furnished rooms (single and shared) with high speed internet access, a fitness room, laundry facilities, game room and a study room with computers. Taylor Hall's dining room has been created with a food court atmosphere. "University Food Court" is an all-you-can-eat facility that allows hungry students to choose from several stations - Italian, Deli, Mexican, Salad Bar and a Potato Bar. Fourteen meals per week are included with residence at Taylor Hall.
Along with the chance to relax and mingle with fellow students Taylor Hall offers tutoring and activities to give students a shared collegiate residential experience. Ben Elias, Dean of Business Affairs for DeVry University, noted that this state-of-the-art facility was designed to provide a safe, fun and productive living experience for residents. He added that students of other schools in the area are also eligible to apply for housing at Taylor Hall.
