Niles Sidewalk Sale
by Sunil Dhar
Niles is the best kept secret shopping destination in Fremont! That is the message that Keith Elrod, board of directors member of the Niles Merchants Association, wants to convey to the shoppers in the Tri-City area. "With over 80 specialty shops, antique shops and eateries in a four square block area, it is the least known of the shopping areas in the city of Fremont," he said.
As the merchants begin to plan for the upcoming Christmas season, it is no surprise that the Niles Merchants Association is sponsoring a huge sidewalk sale. This is the first time that the sidewalk sale is held in the fall. "The merchants are anxious to pass on special discounts to customers to help clear up space in the stores for the Christmas season," said Elrod. This seasonal clearance is a great time for shoppers to explore the variety of businesses in Niles for great bargains as well as unique gift items for early Christmas shopping.
Antique and specialty stores will offer products such as hand-blown glass, fine china and porcelain, western U.S. items, jewelry and furniture. The merchants will have tables on the sidewalks in front of their stores to display the items for sale, many offering one-of-a-kind antiques.
The sidewalks are clean and elegant and are lined with benches and trees, providing a very relaxing stroll from one store to another. This is one of the few areas in Fremont where shopping is truly a pleasure, as it was many years ago.
If you get hungry or thirsty while shopping, or just want to get out of the sun for a while, there are a variety of eateries that can provide some respite from shopping. From coffee shops, Mexican and Chinese restaurants to pizza, there is something for every food lover's delight.
While the event is a sidewalk sale, don't forget to check out the deals in the stores. Most merchants will probably not have as much room outside on the tables as they have inside.
The participating merchants are also offering a chance to win a $100 gift certificate for one lucky shopper. Forms can be picked up at participating businesses and used at any of the participating stores.
The sidewalk sale will be held on Saturday, September 17 from 10:30 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. and is free to the public. There is plenty of parking available in two large parking lots as well as parking on the side streets. Since all stores are in a four block area, no matter where you park, the stores will be a short walk away. Once you get there, look for Keith Elrod, he will be the one in the Niles cap!
