Opening Day ceremonies for Fremont soccer leagueby Mae Mackie
The Football Club (FC) Fremont is hosting its annual Opening Day ceremonies on Sunday, Sept. 11 from noon to 2 p.m. at Central Park Fields 9/10 (at Stevenson & Gallaudet). A parade of teams will kick off the ceremonies at noon, followed by brief speeches from club officials as well as San Jose Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear, a Fremont native and resident. There will also be appearances by Earthquakes players. Following the ceremonies are fun and games hosted by the league which help entertain players and families while waiting for their allotted time slots for formal team and individual portraits. The Earthquakes' mascot, Q, will also be present to entertain kids of all ages. Teams are encouraged to bring empty aluminum cans for the leagues' annual Can Drive fundraiser. There are prize for teams that bring in the most cans. Opening weekend festivities continue at Chevy's in Newark as the league hosts its fundraising event. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of proceeds from bills that are accompanied by the club's fundraising flyer, which is available on the website at www.fcfremont.com.. FC Fremont is a non-profit organization with a purpose of providing opportunities to educate youth under 19 years of age in mental and physical fitness, develop self and community pride, teach sportsmanship and provide all skill and competitive levels of organized soccer.
