Dominican Sisters gather at Mission San Joseby Sister Barbara Larner
Nearly 200 Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose completed their convocation Saturday, July 30. This group which included 32 sisters from the Mexican region, and one sister representing the sisters from Germany, met for 17 days and elected new leadership headed by Sister Gloria Marie Jones.
Sister Jones, from Anaheim, captured the spirit of the meeting in her statement: "Together we experienced so much life, hope and energy for the Gospel and our mission. Our commitment to inclusivity and solidarity gave birth to a new understanding of our internationality, leading to a deepened connection with our brothers and sisters around the world."
Two major areas of study were care of the earth and the Dominican mission of preaching. A desire for greater involvement on the part of all the sisters was also expressed.
Newly elected sisters, who will share leadership responsibilities with Sister Jones, are Sisters Luz Maria Quintero-Reyes, Cecilia Canales, Mary Virginia Leach, Johnellen Turner and Alicia Lucy. The election of Sister Luz Maria Quintero-Reyes was an historic event because she is the first Sister from the Mexican Region to be on Congregational leadership. Internationality took a major leap forward with Sister's election! |
