April 19, 2005 > Newark Council Meeting
Newark Council MeetingThursday, April 14, 2005 by Susana Nuñez
Presentations and Proclamations The city of Newark proclaimed the week of April 30 through May 5, Cinco de Mayo Week in Newark. Latinos Unidos de Newark (LUNA) requested the proclamation and representatives from the organization were present to accept it. In addition, the council proclaimed April 15 as Alan Nagy Day in honor of the vice mayor's 25 years of service on the council. A humorous skit was performed which was reminiscent of April 15, 1980, when Nagy was first sworn in to serve on the council. He was presented with a gift from his fellow staff members as well, a miniature of his legendary red shorts, framed along with a picture of Nagy proudly wearing the real shorts.
Council Matters The council reappointed existing members of the Senior Citizens Standing Advisory Committee and appointed Carol McCarty to the group. A summer recess for the month of August was approved. City staff members congratulated Mayor Smith for an excellent State of the City address and Vice Mayor Nagy was once again congratulated for his 25th anniversary. The council also extended their condolences to the families of Shirley Marshall and Helen Gallegos, council member Sue Johnson's mother, for their losses. The council adjourned in memory of Shirley Marshall and Helen Gallegos. |
