Ohlone forensics team goes for gold at national competition

by Tony C. Yang

Ohlone College Department of Speech and Communication Studies has recently been on the rise, winning gold and silver medals at this year's state championships, thanks to Speech Communications Professor Teresa Sutowski, director of Forensics and Dave Curtis, debate coach and Speech instructor. The Ohlone forensics team has developed into a dedicated, talented and winning team.

"We seek to empower students through enlightened discussion," said Andrea Adams, a senior member of the forensics team. "It's a great experience and you learn a lot." The award-winning team practices twice a week, and is currently competing at the Phi Rho Pi national forensics tournament in Philadelphia, Penn.

The college offers at least a dozen speech classes and two-dozen related courses. You can learn anything from the intricacies of "Voice and Diction" to taking an "Argumentation and Debate Workshop." You can also earn certificates in communications in less than a year, or join Sigma Chi Eta, the Speech Communication Honor Society.
