Experience Earth Sky Water
Elements in Pastel Exhibit
by Arathi Satish
Experience and enjoy the beautiful nature by viewing the exhibit, Earth Sky Water, Elements in Pastel by Sharon Dwyer at Ohlone Arts in the Mission San Jose district.
Sharon, a local artist, grew up in the Bay area and the beautiful South Tahoe. She is a self-taught artist who was inspired and guided by various workshops in different media. Interested in diverse subjects and media, Sharon uses varying techniques and media to suit her inspiration. Different moods in subjects are portrayed with great impact depending on the medium used.
At the present time, Sharon is involved in creating art using pastel, oil paint, collage or colored pencil, sometimes combining media for interesting effects. She is inspired by natural beauty around her everyday - a kaleidoscope of colors, patterns, value and texture. As a "people watcher," she is also inspired by stories that are told with a simple look or body attitude.
Sharon not only creates and studies fine art but also teaches art classes at San Lorenzo Adult School and Hayward Area Recreation Department. She has received many awards for her work and is represented at the Fremont Art Association Gallery in Niles, City Arts Gallery in Hayward, and Art Truckee in Truckee.
"Earth, Sky and Water, Elements in Pastel" depicts nature in all its grandeur. Exhibits include exotic artwork like Patallaqta and Gualala Sunset. Sharon says, "For this exhibit I explored the beauty of our sky, water and land. The images are painted from photographs I have taken in my travels including Hawaii, Peru and my native California. I gain strength and become renewed when I am hiking and exploring outdoors and hope the viewer of my work can appreciate the beauty that is all around us while visiting this exhibit. I feel, particularly now when there is so much negative energy in our world, it is important to surround ourselves with what is peaceful and beautiful"
Asked about the new exhibit at Ohlone Arts Gallery, Nancy Downend who with her husband, Chris own the gallery, commented, "Art is subjective. Either you like it or you don't. When Chris and I visited Sharon Dwyer's exhibit at the Fremont Art's Council we were speechless. She can draw peace, inspiration and hope with soft pastels. The colors are vivid and they demand that you stop and take their subjects in."
Earth Sky Water, Elements in Pastel, by Sharon Dwyer can be viewed September 25 - October 23 at Ohlone Arts Gallery, 43319 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday. Phone 510-657-2977 for further details. The opening reception is on Saturday, September 25 from 6-9 p.m.
We were honored to meet her then and even more excited when she agreed to do this show at Ohlone Arts this month.
