Beyond Superwoman: 25 Top CEOs Show Us How to Get a Life

by Sandy Silva

Karin Strasser Kauffman and Peggy Downes Baskin, co-authors of Beyond Superwoman: 25 Top CEOs Show Us How to Get a Life, share an evening of insights they gathered from 25 top Silicon Valley executives who rejected the unrealistic expectation to be a "Superwoman." Kauffman and Baskin challenge the notion that women can do it all, personally and professionally. Beyond Superwoman offers practical advice for all working- women, regardless of their position in the organizational hierarchy.

The insights come from women with families, women thinking about starting a family and women who have chosen not to have children. Based on intimate conversations with female superstars such as California State Senator Jackie Speier, former mayor of San Jose, Susan Hammer, Ann Livermore, Vice-President of Hewlitt-Packard, Mindi Keirnan, general manager of the San Jose Mercury News, Martha Kanter, President of De Anza College, the authors offer a variety of new work/life patterns for dealing with the personal/professional tug-of-war many women encounter.

Karin Strasser Kauffman taught Political Science and Women's Studies for over 20 years before serving two terms as a Monterey County Supervisor. She has been nationally honored for her leadership to permanently preserve the California Big Sur coast. Peggy Downes Baskin holds a Ph.D. and has taught politics for 18 years at Santa Clara University. She is currently teaching Women's Studies at U.C. Santa Cruz.
