Sharing the Arts in Union City
by Diane La Mountaine
The Union City Arts Council brought their annual "Sharing the Arts" show to a new location this year. On Saturday, April 24 and Sunday April 25, Paddy's Coffee House on Smith Street was the place to be! The setting was a perfect showcase for over 35 pieces of fine art, ranging from acrylic, water colors, mixed media, oil pastel, oil, ink and pencil, sculpture and photography. Much of the art was displayed on wonderful new art panels, funded by Union City Friends.
Family, friends, patrons and several Union City Officials mingled with artists from Hayward, Union City, Newark and Fremont at the casual reception. Ten pieces of art were sold, ranging in price from $40 to $300, bringing in over $1000! One artwork by D' Ann Hirsch was purchased will end up in a New York office while another by Juneko Martinson was purchased by Paddy. Mayor Green placed a custom order with Johnny Rio and Linda Fernandez is now the proud owner of an original painting by Ann-Marie Haley.
Tony Acosta, Chris Valuckas and Leisure Services staff members "Nicole and Cat," used their exceptional organizational skills to support the event. Art Council members Belinda Maloney, Jo Anne Allen, Ollie Smith, Linda Fernandez and Diane La Mountaine contributed public relations, set-up, staffing and break-down. Mariam White from Tri-Ced created the program and donated 150 copies; Thank you Mariam and Tri-Ced. Honorable mention goes to Ken Smith and Steve Miller (La Mountaine), for their help as well. Paddy Iyer, owner of Paddy's however, is our hero! Thank you for the use of your beautiful coffee house and your enthusiasm for the arts. The event was a gratifying expression of support for local art and artists!
