Summer Reading Game 2004

by Bonnie Janssen

Children of all ages are invited to take a swashbuckling journey in search of treasure this summer by playing the Alameda County Library summer reading game, the Secret of Pirate's Cove. The game will be available at all Alameda County Library branches beginning the week of June 14th continuing through August 14th. Bonnie Janssen, Children's Services Coordinator says, "In addition to having a rollicking good time, we have found through the years that children who participate in the summer reading game maintain and increase their reading skills."

"Adventurers and Buccaneers" may begin by picking up their game board at any Alameda County Library branch. The game board gives a glimpse into the Pirate's Cove and provides a bingo board to play the game. Reading is the method used to reveal the secret, each 20 minute period of reading entitles the reader to one spin of the special dial available at all Alameda County Library branches.

The game is open to all ages, and "Young Adventurers" not yet reading on their own may count time listening to others read. Readers who complete one row receive a winner's game sticker and temporary tattoo. They may continue reading and spinning until they have stamped all the pirate memorabilia on the bingo board, thus qualifying for a special "black-out" prize - a mysterious parrot of their very own, a pizza certificate from Round Table and a new key chain from the San Francisco Giants! Sponsors of the Secret of Pirate's Cove include: The Alameda County Library Foundation, Round Table Pizza, and the San Francisco Giants.

In addition to the Secret of Pirate's Cove reading game, special events (storytellers, puppet shows, musicians, etc) will be offered at all of the Alameda County Library branches.
