A Much Needed Affaire!
by Arathi Satish
"An Elegant affaire" is a much needed affaire. The League of Volunteers is holding the 13th annual "An Elegant Affaire" on Friday the 13th of February. This is a great way to celebrate Valentine season since LOV's mission is to promote volunteerism and enhance quality of life in the Tri-Cities area of Fremont, Newark and Union City for everyone, especially youth, senior citizens and the needy.
This event will benefit LOV's popular Arts In School Program that brings in-school - multi-cultural and performing assemblies to various schools. Executive Director Shirley Sisk said that the organization sends out a list of artists to the schools and lets them pick out two shows they like. All schools are encouraged to apply. Ms. Sisk added that last year they sponsored shows in 28 schools, conducted 98 assemblies and 3 workshops. Last year's event helped to bring these performances to over 30,000 youngsters. Due to budget cuts, requests for the school assemblies are in high demand.
The event is being held at the Newark Pavilion. Attorney General Bill Lockyer and his wife Nadia are the Honorary Chairs while Jan Vincent of JVA Business Services will be the Chairperson of the event. They all promise a great evening of fabulous food, entertainment and fun. Chef's Councilwoman Sue and Lowell Johnson, Alameda County School Superintendent Sheila Jordan and Board President Enrique Palacios, Eileen McDonald (preparing a salad delightfully called "LOV Me Don't Leaf Me"), Evelyn Burnham, attorneys Lou Willet and Jonathan LaRose and Senator Liz Figueroa - (preparing a fantastic desert called "Capitol Cr¸me Delight) have selected great recipes to serve up a fantastic evening of culinary delights accompanied by appropriate fine wines and ending the evening with special blends of coffee by Fremont Coffee Roasting.
The pampered guests will be served by local high school students and tuxedoed wine stewards. During the cocktail hour that begins at 6:30 p.m., hors d'oeuvres are being specially prepared by the students of Mission Valley ROP's Culinary Academy Class and local restaurants and guests will be entertained by local singer Kathy Avery Davis. Dinner entertainment will be provided by Gary Lapow, song writer, singer and guitar player. He is also one of the artists available to the schools through LOV's "Art in School Program", the beneficiary of the event. Elected officials from Congress, the State Senate and Assembly, Mayors and School Boards, School Superintendents and Teachers Association Presidents and more are providing auction prizes, in addition to the terrific live auction to be held following dinner by MC and auctioneer Rick Geha of Keller Williams Reality.
As Ms. Sisk points out, "It is an evening of fine food and fun which will enrich the lives of our children". Celebrate this year's Valentine's Day with an "Elegant Affaire." Tickets are $75 per person and reservations are limited to 160. Few tickets are left. So hurry and call LOV-Newark at 793-5683 for more details.
