Tae Kwon Do team gears up for travel to the Philippine NationalsFrom staff reports
Manila Tae Kwon Do of Union City received a special invitation to participate in the 2005 Samsung Best of the Best Competition on Aug. 10 through 14 and the Philippine National Tae Kwon Do Championship on Aug. 6 and 7.
Their goal is to field a team of 18 Black Belt competitors, coaches, medical support and guardians to these events. Five black belts are currently 2005 California State Team members: Almaruthe Condell, Jade Lopez, Christian Chino Cruz, Ausbert Santa Ana, Jr. and Daniel Del Castillo. In the last seven years, Manila Tae Kwon Do has produced six U.S. National Team Members.
Most of the team has roots in the Philippines and this year's travel will be a first time experience for the kids. For the past five years the group has sought approval and invitation from the Philippine Taekwondo Association allowing the team to participate in this national event. This year they received an exclusive invitation.
The team is gathering Tae Kwon Do uniforms and equipment that will be donated to selected schools in impoverished areas of the Philippines where instruction is available but equipment and uniforms are scarce and expensive. They are also looking for donations of money, medical and first aid supplies to assist a nursing staff who will care for the kids as they prepare for competition.
